How to develop urban bus services in Kampala?

On behalf of KCCA, Transitec is carrying out a study on the development of urban bus services in Kampala (population 4.7 million). A challenge in a city where 100 % of public transport is provided by paratransit operators.

Transitec, in a consortium with ODA, TESS and URTC, is carrying out a study on behalf of KCCA, financed by the AfDB, on the introduction of urban bus services in Kampala (4.7 million inhabitants). At present, the Ugandan capital's transport system relies mainly on paratransit services.

The recent mission in July was an opportunity to organize a consultation with minibus operators and to imagine their role in the process of transport massification that is urgently needed in one of Africa's most congested cities.

During this mission, we were able to share our experience gained in other countries in the region and convince our interlocutors that no public transport project could achieve its objectives without closely associating paratransit industry. A huge challenge ahead, but a lot of good will and energy around the table!
