Walk21: an international conference on walking in Kigali from 16 to 19 October 2023
Transitec will be taking part in the 23rd international conference on walking - Walk 21 - to be held in Kigali from 16 to 19 October 2023. For this first African edition, two studies carried out by Transitec will be presented, one on Yaoundé and the other on Dakar.
Walking is the main mode of urban travel in most African cities, but initiatives to protect pedestrians from car traffic, make walking more pleasant and even promote it for its economic, social and environmental benefits are rare on the continent.
Inviting experts from all over Africa and the world, the Walk21 conference is being organised for the first time in Africa in partnership with the University of Rwanda, the City of Kigali and UNEP.
Two studies carried out by Transitec will be presented as part of the event:
- the technical guide for improving pedestrian mobility in Cameroonian cities carried out in 2018 (presented by Angelin Zegha, on Tuesday 17 October as part of TD.2.2.)
- taking walking into account in long-term strategic planning, with the example of the Dakar Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (presented by Julien Allaire, on Wednesday 18 October as part of TD.5.3.).
For the occasion, Transitec is signing the International Charter for Walking, a common reference to which cities and civil society can adhere to encourage the practice of walking on a daily basis and the improvement of the quality of walking in communities.
