Urban Mobility Week in Yaoundé: Pedestrianisation of the City Centre and Reform of paratransit
From 28 February to 4 March 2022, the Yaoundé Urban Community organised an Urban Mobility Week to raise awareness of the issues associated with daily commuting and to publicise the projects under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan adopted in 2018.
As part of Yaoundé Cœur de Ville project, Yaoundé Urban Community (CUY) organised an Urban Mobility Week from 28 February to 4 March 2022, which included the pedestrianisation of the city centre around the central market, the presentation of a roadmap for the reform of paratransit and awareness-raising on road safety in schools:
- · Pedestrianisation of the city centre: this involves experimenting with the traffic plan that has been proposed in the framework of Yaoundé Cœur de Ville. This plan provides for the closure of traffic in three streets around the large central market;
- · Presentation of the roadmap for the reform of paratransit: the CUY presented the main guidelines for a reform of paratransit which includes collective taxis, motorbike taxis and minibuses;
- · Awareness-raising on road safety in secondary schools: the SECUROUTE association carried out an awareness-raising campaign among the pupils of four secondary schools on the dangers associated with motor traffic and the precautions necessary to reduce the risk of accidents;
These different activities have been prepared with the support of Transitec and its partners, who are working within the framework of the Yaoundé Coeur de Ville project, to implement the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP).
