Training Session in Ouagadougou on the Integration of Mobility-Urbanism-Landscape in the Development of Roads and Streets

As part of the second phase of the Ouagadougou Sustainable Development Project (PDDO2), Transitec and Urbaplan provided training from 27 to 30 September 2021 on the integration of mobility, urban planning and landscape concepts in roads and streets development projects. The lack of these concepts in road design, has been a major challenge for promoting cycling and walking for short-distance travel in the Burkinabe capital, where motorbikes dominate.

As Ouagadougou experiences strong demographic growth and rapid urban sprawl, the Ouagadougou Sustainable Development Project, led by the Municipal Agency for Major Works (AMGT) - and financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) - plans to enhance secondary urban centers, by developing public space and reinforcing the creation of markets, bus stations, public gardens and school, health, cultural and sports facilities.

From 27 to 30 September 2021, Transitec and Urbaplan provided training on the integration of mobility, urban planning and landscape aspects in roads and streets development projects. Targeted at engineers, urban planners and environmentalists from the various departments of the city of Ouagadougou, the objective of this training was to raise awareness among the various actors in charge of road development on the urban, landscape and mobility issues related to the implementation of road projects, particularly, during the design of standard profiles and the operation and management of intersections. In a city where motorbikes account for more than 80% of traffic, the issues of the distribution of public space between the different modes of transport and adjacent activities have been widely discussed.

Thus, within the framework of this Project, road projects in Ouagadougou will allow for improvement of urban travel through the asphalting of the structural road network, but will also afford the opportunity to create public spaces that improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and users of these spaces, and thus transform them into real urban projects.
