Following the development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) adopted by Yaoundé Urban Community in 2020, Transitec is contributing within the framework of the program dubbed "Yaoundé Coeur de Ville" to improve the mobility conditions of the residents of the Cameroonian capital.

This program includes support to Yaoundé Urban Community (YUC) in the definition and implementation of rapid impact actions (also called “Quicks-Wins”), identified within the framework of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP): reconfiguration of a number of intersections with proposed solutions for pedestrian safety and traffic flow, installation of pedestrian walkways in the city center, public outreach and awareness  on the challenges of urban mobility, public transport regulation, etc.

A capacity building program for the YUC,  intended for the operationalization and implementation of the SUMP, is also being developed around the following themes: identification of potential issues and the provision of various solutions; intersection improvements, pedestrian facilities, traffic plans, public transport regulation (including paratransit), etc.

Finally, this program financed under the third Debt Reduction and Development Agreement (Contrat de Désendettement et de Développement - C2D) between Cameroon and French Agency for Development will help improve traffic flow at three of the city’s entrances, which currently have major problems:

  • Elig-Edzoa intersection, located on a main corridor providing access to the city-center from the east – The impact of the large number of pedestrians accessing the surrounding neighborhoods on traffic flow, further reduces the capacity of the already congested intersection. In fact, roads of different hierarchy intersect here, making management of this intersection particularly complex in a very busy urban area.
  • Elig-Effa square generates a major need for intermodality with its bus terminal next to the outskirts and the Mokolo market. A multimodal transportation platform must be created at this western entrance to the city integrating pedestrian flows, local taxis serving the market and the districts, long-distance taxis connecting the suburban areas, as well as buses and motorcycle taxis.
  •  Mvan intersection, an essential link to the city entrance from the south – At this intersection, there is an axis concentrating a large supply of interurban transport on one side, and on the other side, there is a structuring axis collecting flows from the developing south-eastern districts!

Transitec contributes to the program, in consortium with Louis Berger, Urbaplan and Bec La Routière, with the aim of supporting the YUC in the first actions of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, developed by Transitec in association with Transamo and DVDH in 2018 and 2019 under the MobiliseYourCity initiative.
